About us

The Department of Molecular Mechanisms of Disease (DMMD) is a joint department of the Vetsuisse Faculty (VSF) and the Faculty of Science (MNF). The department is headed by Prof. Michael O. Hottiger (D.V.M, PhD).

The DMMD was founded in January 1993 as a branch of the former Institute of Pharmacology and Biochemistry under the name of Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry, and since July 2001, Institute of Veterinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IVBMB).
The renaming to Department of Molecular Mechanisms of Disease (DMMD) took place in February 2016.

The mission of the DMMD is to elucidate molecular mechanisms leading to diseases, to lay the foundation for novel therapies and to offer a comprehensive and modern teaching program to students at all levels and both faculties.
